Shawn David has been creating flattering, fabulous salon services for 28 years—for the last 14 as owner of Hairspray. Shawn recognized that something was missing from the Indianapolis hair salon scene. Not the number of salons; rather, the lack of a quality salon that offered ultra high-end results minus the ultra high end price tags. His accomplishments, however, do not stop there. Shawn has trained for the Hair Olympics, been a platform artist for KMS California, and traveled from New York to L.A. as a hair and makeup artist for the Finish Line, styling models for banners and catalogs. Hairspray has been featured on the Fox network’s Ambush Makeover, and styled shoots for national and local publications including Finish Line Magazine, Genre, Indianapolis Monthly, Indiana Bride and Indianapolis Dine. Hairspray has been recognized one of the top salons in Indianapolis, ranked in the top two percent (by whom?) Indiana salons for color. Shawn is ranked as one of the top stylists (by whom?). Shawn continues to teach designers every day. Though he has reached a level of local prestige in Indy, his insides are still small town. When Shawn isn’t behind the chair or running his business, you will find him in the kitchen, spending time with friends, and more often than not, quoting snappy dialogue from “The Devil Wears Prada.” Shawn’s passion for what he does is undeniable.
Q. When did you decide you wanted to open your own salon?
A. I always knew in the back of my mind I might want to own a salon and after a few years in the industry I became sure of it. I wanted the opportunity to help young talent grow, as my mentor had helped me.
Q. Has it been what you imagined it to be?
A. While challenging like anything else, salon ownership has also been VERY rewarding in many ways. I can’t imagine not doing it now.
Q. What has been the most rewarding part of this journey?
A. Hopefully helping others to grow in their personal and professional lives. Who cares how smart you are or what you know if you don’t want to share it?!
Q. You have been a mentor for your employees. Who was your mentor? What do you think it was that he or she taught you in particular that has stuck with you the most or has helped you the most in opening your own salon?
A. Bill Wright was my mentor. He taught me the importance of foundation work (define) and I now apply that to ALL aspects of the industry and to everyday work.
Q. What have you found to be the most important thing to practice when owning a salon?
A. Patience and good listening skills.
Q. What keeps you motivated and inspired?
A. Inspired and inspiring employees. I’m motivated to stay current with new trends.

We want you to get the most out of your Hairspray experience, so please keep the following policies in mind.
• If you need to cancel an appointment, please give us at least 24 hours notice to avoid a charge.
• Please arrive a few minutes before your scheduled appointment, so that you can be seated at your stylist’s station and ready to begin at your start time.
Late arrivals will be counted as no-shows, and charged one-half the cost of their appointment.
• We recommend that guests schedule their next appointment prior to leaving the salon to assure the date and time most convenient for you.
• We welcome the patter of little feet as long as the lucky child has a scheduled appointment. We hope to see you soon.
OUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
The Hairspray design team has created an accelerated training course aimed towards new talent. Just because you graduated doesn’t necessarily mean you are able to jump right in. Shawn uses an analogy to help explain this idea. He says, “You must learn to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run”. Hairspray has set the bar high. Shawn takes his employees through a training period, in which they will learn to master the consistency in skills and culture that makes Hairspray the same wonderful experience each and every time. The Hairspray design team continues to educate themselves through advanced classes, to stay on the cutting edge.
